Design and Technology (DT)
At Sevenoaks Primary School, we believe in preparing our children for a technological future.
We aim to provide children with design and technology skills that will be vital for future jobs and provide valuable life skills. We ensure design and technology is an inspiring, practical subject.
Design and technology is taught through a skills-based curriculum. Children have stimulating and exciting DT projects that enhance their learning. Our pupils design and make products that solve real, relevant problems within a variety of contexts. They are encouraged to take risks, to become resourceful, innovative citizens
There is a clear progression of skills throughout the school and children continuously develop these in different curricular areas.
Pupils have opportunities to evaluate past and present designs to develop a critical understanding of the impact of design and technology on their daily life and in the wider world.
When designing and making, our pupils are taught to design, make and evaluate. They also develop technical knowledge and skills.
Our pupils are taught important cooking skills, so they will be able to feed themselves. They also develop an understanding of nutrition, where food is sourced and healthy eating.
The aims of design and technology are:
- to develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
- to build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
- critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
