Dear Parents/Carers

Can you believe that we have been in the new building for a month?  Where does the time go! It is amazing how quickly we have settled into the new school. The children and staff love the facilities and the space and the feedback has been incredibly positive.

The transition has been seamless and this has been down to the incredible hard work of the staff across the whole school. I couldn’t wish for a better team – thank you everyone!

I would like to offer my very special thanks to Briony Wood, our school bursar, who retired on Friday. Briony joined the school 17 years ago. She has been one of my most important acquisitions to the school team and she has made an incredible contribution to SPS.

In recent years, Briony has played a leading role in managing the new school project, from the planning stage, throughout the build process to the move over the summer holidays. Many organisations would have a large team overseeing the work but Briony has shouldered the responsibility throughout and we all owe her a huge debt of gratitude.

Although she officially retired on Friday, it is a sign of her devotion and commitment to SPS, that she will continue to be involved with the school until the whole project is completed in March 2018.

We would like to share a recent drone image taken of the school premises. It gives an unprecedented view of all the work undertaken so far, and also can give parents an idea of the proximity of the Phase 1 area to the new building once the old building has been demolished.

Road Crossing Patrol vacancy
We are actively recruiting for a Road Crossing Patrol person to replace Mrs James, who retired in July. The hours are 8:30 – 9:00am and 3:00 – 3:30pm, weekdays and term time only.

Admission to Primary School – September 2018/19
If you have a child who was born between 1st September 2013 and 31st August 2014 and, therefore, due to start in September 2017, you will be able to apply for your child’s place in primary school from 6th November 2017. The application period will close on 15th January 2018. If you do not have access to the internet and would like to come into school to complete your application, please contact Mrs Doleman, our Admissions Officer, in the school office to arrange an appointment.

Midday Supervisor vacancies
The school has positions available for Midday Supervisors. The hours are 1.5 hours per day, term time only.

Absences from school

Sevenoaks Primary School is committed to the continuous raising of achievement of all our pupils.  Regular attendance is critical if our pupils are to be successful and benefit from the opportunities presented to them.

Authorising Absence

Only the Headteacher can authorise absence for approved reasons.  Where there is doubt, the Headteacher, on behalf of the governing body, should take a consistent approach.  The absence must be unavoidable.  The Headteacher is not obliged to accept a parent’s explanation and if the absence is not authorised, parents will be notified.

Authorised absence codes will only be used after there has been some communication between the parent and school.

The following reasons are examples of the kinds of absence that will not be authorised:

  • Persistent non-specific illness e.g. poorly/unwell
  • Absence of siblings if one child is ill
  • Oversleeping
  • Inadequate clothing/uniform
  • Confusion over school dates
  • Medical/dental appointments of more than half a day without very good reasons
  • Child’s/family birthday
  • Shopping trip

Leave of Absence

Time off school for family holidays is not a right. Schools have discretion to allow absence in term time for special circumstances only such as:

  • For service personnel and other employees who are prevented from taking holidays outside term-time if the holiday will have minimal disruption to the pupil’s education;
  • When a family needs to spend time together to support each other during or after a crisis, such as death or terminal illness of a person close to the family;

Applications for Leave of Absence MUST be made at least 4 weeks in advance of the requested date.

Agreement to each request is at the discretion of the Headteacher, acting on behalf of the Governing Body (Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2006).  Each case will be judged on its merits in line with the criteria outlined above.

Uniform Shop opening dates
The uniform shop will be open on the following dates:
9th and 30th October
13th and 27th November
11th December
It is located in the Studio, and access is through the exit door to the building.
Toilet facilities
Whilst we have gained lots of new facilities in the move, what we no longer have is a bathroom for parents and preschool siblings to use.
We appreciate that many used the facilities in the entrance of the old school, however, the new building does not allow people to pass through the front doors without a prior appointment. We appreciate this may be an inconvenience (no pun intended) but the intention is that the school is fully secure.
Please ensure that you and your preschool child uses the facilities at home before coming to the school.
Sports Photos
Does your child participate in an external sports club? We would like to invite pupils to bring in a photograph of themselves in their kits to create a display celebrating the diversity of sports they enjoy.
What we would need:
Photograph in an envelope, marked with your child’s name and class.
These can be handed in to your child’s teacher.

Cars and parking
In the summer of 2014, the Parent Council and school produced a leaflet to help keep our children safe on the way to and from school. The document was produced as a result of the concern felt by parents, staff, governors and local residents about the increased levels of traffic around the site.
The Parent Council and school will continue to work with the Sevenoaks District Council, Kent Highways and local residents to improve safety but we do require your support.
If you are driving:
Are you aware that we are receiving reports of the following incidents occurring outside the school every day?
  • Roads are blocked to prevent cars getting through
  • Cars driving on pavements so they do not have to wait for a car to pass
  • Cars parking on double yellow lines
  • Cars parking on the zig zag lines
  • Drivers conducting three point turns in the school entrance
  • Cars parking on the blind bend of Camden Road
There are also repeated incidents of aggressive and abusive behaviour being reported.
Photographic evidence of the above parking issues have been received by the school, and we continue to ask you to report any concerns you have to the following authorities:
  • Kent Police by calling 101 (police non-emergency phone numbers)
  • Sevenoaks District Council by calling 01732 227000 (for double yellow line and zig-zag offences only)
Request for Kids’ Kitchen items
Now we are settled into the Kids’ Kitchen, we have identified a couple of items that would benefit the area for the children:
  • An upright fridge freezer. It doesn’t matter if it’s a little battered/dirty. It just needs to be in good working order. Maybe someone has one going spare in their garage, and hasn’t got round to disposing of it?!
  • Two sheets of Perspex, measuring approximately 90cm x 60cm, to be installed as splash backs behind the oven units.
If anyone is able to help out in any capacity, please do not hesitate to let the school office know.
